The Russian Olive

THE RUSSIAN OLIVE
ORIGINAL ACRYLIC, 2018

Some friendships ask for nothing more than our presence.
For years, this magnificent Russian Olive tree has stood just beyond my kitchen window, quietly accompanying the rhythm of my everyday life.
As I washed dishes by hand, I found myself returning to its weathered trunk, its twisting branches, and gentle movement of its silver-green leaves dancing in the Montana breeze.

Over time, the tree became more than part of the landscape. It became a silent teacher.

Its deeply rooted strength reminded me to remain grounded through life's seasons, while its ever-reaching branches spoke of hope, resilience, and the courage to continue growing toward the light.
There were mornings when the sunlight filtered through its canopy with breathtaking beauty, and evenings when its silhouette stood quietly against the fading sky. It never demanded attention, yet it always offered peace.

Painting this tree in 2018 was my way of honoring that unspoken relationship.

Every brushstroke became a conversation-an attempt to capture not only the form of the Russian Olive, but the quiet energy it shared with me day after day. I wanted the texture of its bark to feel ancient, its branches to move like living veins, and its canopy to shimmer with the same gentle vibration I experienced while standing at my kitchen sink.

The painting is not simply about a tree.

It is about the profound connections we form with the places that witness our lives, reminding us that nature often becomes our most faithful companion.
