PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST: The Abstract of Susie Wolf, Created by Ethan Kaull Videography

Image
THE ABSTRACT OF SUSIE WOLF Life is so very interesting. One minute you are cooking a beautiful meal and feeling so lighthearted and happy, then all of a sudden you feel a sharp pain in your chest above your heart, accompanied by a tremendous pain in your forehead that creates a total physical weakness causing you to drop to the kitchen floor. Luckily, you have your cell phone that is sitting on the kitchen counter, and you have just enough strength to call Barbara, your neighbor who drives our local small town ambulance service truck. After twenty years of being a resident in our tiny town of Montana, Barbara and others have driven me several times to our rural hospital in Bozeman. It was because of my health issues that I met Ethan Kaull. All of our ambulance drivers who are volunteers, are under a great deal of stress due to the unexpected growth in our town. Therefore, certain needs for the ambulance services were being ignored.  I believe it was Barbara who had the idea o...

INSTALLATION AT CAL ARTS

Image
INSTALLATION AT CAL ARTS In 1974 and 1975 I attended California Institute of the Arts. I auditioned for the School of Music and was accepted in as a coloratura soprano. During my first year at Cal Arts, it was mandatory that all first year students, (no matter what school/department they were accepted into) attend classes once a week in art history. Every week I sat in the classroom watching films about Vincent van Goph, Picasso, and many more. At the time, Andy Warhol had emerged and I fell in love with his work. I remember loving just about all art that I was exposed to in those days.   Although I was only in attendance for two years at CalArts, I never stopped thinking about the School of Art and my friends who were artists, students who painted mostly abstractly because abstract was huge in the 1970's.  Flash forward to 2023 when I received an invitation to the 50th year anniversary of CalArts. Living in Montana it was impossible to attend the gala that would ta...

MOON SHADOW

Image
MOON SHADOW Completed 6/15/2023 36" x 36" Acrylics, Heavy Body Medium, Ground Sand MOON SHADOW was inspired by my sister, Sharifah. A few years back we were talking on the phone and I happened to mention how amazing the crescent moon was the night before. I remember going on and on about how Montana has the most beautiful night sky's because in Montana, there are no skyscrapers and we are closer to the moon than Sharifah is at sea level. I remember explaining to Sharifah that the moon in Montana is unlike any other place I have lived. We have a clear view of the night, and with that...there are millions of stars and a striking moon.  Well, one day the phone rang and my sister began to warn me that I should be expecting a gift she purchased for me at an art fair. Eventually the gift arrived and to my surprise it was a very large round mirror that was enhanced as a stained-glass crescent moon. I was so thrilled by the moon. For quite a while I had it hanging in our bedroom ...

LORELEI

Image
LORELEI 13" x 19" Acrylics and Oils on Photo Paper Why photo paper, you ask? Good question! Who in their right mind paints on glossy photo paper? Well...I do! Here's how the story goes about Lorelei. Lorelei was created with left over paint from a painting I had just recently finished. I had quite a lot of paint on the pallet. I looked down at the colors and asked myself, 'what am I going to do with this?'  Well, here's the true story. Have you ever purchased those wonderful little fruit cups that come in those darling little plastic cups? If so, you know what I'm talking about. My husband loves those fruit cups, so we always stock up on them. I particularly love them because they serve two purposes; first is to feed us. Second is to repurpose those little cups into paint pots for my studio! I literally have stacks and stacks of the little round fruit cups sitting on the edge of my wall easel. The truth is that I throw very little away because items such...

WHEAT UNDER FIRE

Image
WHEAT UNDER FIRE 16" x 20" Acrylics, Metallics On Stretched Canvas Completed in October 2023 In Wheat Montana fire is a threat not only to life and wildlife, but also a tremendous threat to our way of life. Hundreds, thousands of miles of wheat grow every year in order to feed not only Montana and the United States, but we actually feed the world. Every Spring, Summer and Fall we watch the planting, the maintenance and the harvest of the wheat. Montana is one of the largest wheat-producing states in the U.S., especially known for: *HARD RED SPRING WHEAT *DURUM WHEAT *HARD WHITE WHEAT Montana wheat is commonly exported to countries in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and even Europe. So, imagine living a mere two miles from one of the largest producers of wheat on this planet. The irony of this painting is that...I have Celiac Disease; therefore, I am unable to take one bite of bread, or a donut, some wonderful pasta, or my favorite snack, a simple sugar cookie. Additio...
