OVERTONES

Image
OVERTONES 36" x 36" Acrylics, Oil, Metallics & Dry Oatmeal on Gallery Canvas. Completed March 26, 2022 OVERTONES was such a personal composition. I hope you love this true story. The composition had lived in my head for several years. Not because I had planned to paint the composition abstractly, no. The composition lived in my head due to a frightening event that I experienced. If you have ever lived in SW Montana, or if you currently live in SW Montana, you might have heard of a famous town called Copper City. Back in the mining days of old, Copper City was a flourishing mining town where thousands of people flooded to, in order to mine copper and gold. In the summer of 2007, my husband Kurt invited me to take a trip to see the old mining town called Copper City. Curiosity drove me to happily accept Kurt's invitation, so we hopped into our four-wheel drive pick-up truck and headed for Copper City which was merely a few miles from our home. In order to find the old h...

SOTTO ROCCE AQUA

Image
SOTTO ROCCE AQUA (Rocks Under Water) 36" x 36" Acrylics, Ink & Oil On Stretched Gallery Canvas Sotto Rocce Aqua was an intuitive abstract piece when I first laid down the underpainting with titanium white gesso. I had been thinking about blue with black for quite a while so for some reason this canvas became the Ginny pig.  Living so close the Jefferson River, The Madison River and the Gallatin River I have become very much in love with rocks under water. Sotto Rocce Aqua and Salamander both speak for my love of watching calming river water flow so peacefully over the rocks on the bottom of the rivers. Naturally, the design of this painting is quite abstract. However, I hope that you can see and feel the rhythm of the water over the odd shaped stones. I mean, after all...this is a Susie Rosso Wolf painting! -Susie Rosso Wolf

HIDDEN HOUSE ON HWY 20

Image
HIDDEN HOUSE ON HWY 20 24" x 36" x 1" Gallery Wrapped Canvass  Hidden House on HWY 20 was a long time coming. Years ago in 1980 I left my family home in California to visit my brother and sister-in-law who lived in Blodgett, Oregon.  I purchased a Greyhound Bus ticket to travel from Los Angeles to Blodgett. The moment my sister-in-law picked me up in Corvallis and then drove me to Blodgett I just knew I was supposed to see Oregon. Back in those days I really loved travelling, I was enamored by the beauty of America. Oregon was a perfect example of spectacular beauty in the Pacific Northwest. My brother Mike and his family lived in a 101-year-old dairy farmhouse. The house was very large, and it had an enormous front porch. My family raised chickens, geese, hunted turkey and elk and they also had a huge conifer tree forest directly above and behind their home.  If you climbed up into the tree forest and sat down on the ground, you could see much of the Willamette Va...

COSMIC DREAM

Image
COSMIC DREAM Cosmic Dream came from my love of the astral world when I was very young. I spent many evenings as a child sitting on our porch steps watching the silver stars shining in the dark of night.  My grandmother believed in the astral world, and she believed in a person's aura. I know this to be true because she often would stop me as I entered our family kitchen, look right at me, then say to my sister or my father, "look at Susie's beautiful aura today!" I painted Cosmic Dream with its dark aura streaming by the blue moon with gold, silver, pale violet, lake green and white. This mixed medium original painting has been on display in retail and in gallery. The original painting is not for sale; however, beautiful prints are available on order. -Susie Rosso Wolf

SALAMANDER

Image
SALAMANDER 36" x 36" Acrylics, Metallics & Oil  Stretched Gallery Canvas Salamander has a secret! The title was given to me by my husband who noticed something in this painting that is most unusual. The way the story goes is that I was feeling this painting was finished so I asked my husband to give it a name, as I often do. He looked at the painting for several moments and out of the blue he said "SALAMANDER!" I looked at him as if he was crazy! Salamander? Why Salamander? All of a sudden, he pointed to a shape in the painting that totally made sense. Salamander abstractly represents stones under the waters of our many rivers here in Montana. So, while my husband was looking at the painting, attempting to name it, he noticed a white shape over one of the stones! The white shape looks exactly like a salamander sunbathing on the rock. Salamander has been in retail and in gallery. Currently, Salamander is for sale; available for gallery, retail, restaurant instal...

THE ITALIAN

Image
THE ITALIAN 12" x 24" Acrylics and Metallics On Stretched Canvas. The Italian was inspired by my sister, Sharifah, who has a love for the color gold. As usual, I didn't have a composition in mind in the beginning of the underpainting, therefore I simply scraped multiple paint colors onto my pallet. I began to think of Italy and their love for all things gold, then suddenly the composition came alive. Thinking of Sharifah inspired the color scheme of this 12" x 24" acrylic abstract piece. Sharifah sparked the memories of our mother's beautiful gold sofa and chair in our living room. And then I began to add the red of our mother's beautiful bowl that held our gorgeous camellia flowers that floated inside the bowl. Next, I mentally walked into our kitchen adding many colors that popped into my mind from years gone by; green, orange, copper, blue, and more.  The Italian has been sold; however, prints are absolutely available. You can leave a comment here an...

FIELDS IN MOTION

Image
FIELDS IN MOTION 36" x 36" Acrylics and oil on stretched canvas Completed 9-18-2025 In Montana, everywhere I look I am blessed to see the most beautiful fields of grass in the world. It's true. We are known around the world for our grasses and our wheat. In fact, the town/area that I live in is called Wheat Montana. The fields are amazing. If you spend a few moments looking at them, you instantly feel a connection to nature, to the earth, to Montana, and to God. When you take a few minutes to watch the clouds above the grassy hills you will drown in the beauty of our enormous "Big Sky." If you don't have a way to visit our amazing grasses and fields of beauty, prints of Fields In Motion are absolutely available and, the original 36" x 36" painting is also available for purchase or exhibition. -Susie Rosso Wolf

CANYON DRIVE

Image
Canyon Drive 16" x 16" Acrylics on stretched gallery canvas. Completed 2022   Intuitively speaking, when I began this painting with black edges, I knew right then that this painting would be very colorful. No composition here, just letting myself go with feeling and memories. I do this quite often with my abstracts, just let it all go and follow the road to authenticity.  Canyon Drive earned its name because I realized how much the final product reminds me of the days when I would jump in my car, turn right at Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway. All the way up Sunset Boulevard I would turn up the tunes, sing along with the radio while my hair would blow out the window. Eventually, Hollywood Boulevard appeared along with the tourist's window shopping and the impatient locals yelling out of their car windows at the visitors from many different countries who were hoping to see the movie stars on the strand. Canyon Drive means a lot to me. It digs up so many beautiful...

FEBRUARY FANTASY

Image
Completed April 7th, 2019 Born in February, a few years back I decided to purchase a gift for myself. I walked into our nearest art supply store and ordered this 60" x 80" gallery stretched canvas. Amethyst is the birthstone for February, so I decided to limit my pallet to purple, Prussian blue, black and white. Without a composition I decided to allow myself to wander on the canvas by making some initial marks that I liked with my longest brush. Given the size of this canvas, I knew this piece was going to be fun. I absolutely let myself feel totally, completely free as shapes began to appear. My only goals were to paint something new, something abstract and to put all of the love I feel for art, onto the canvas. After six weeks of daily painting, many hours each day, I was finally happy with this very unique piece. Many people ask questions about this piece; I always love answering them. I find it an honor to be asked questions about my work; it really makes my day. Febru...

ALONG THE GALLATIN

Image
ALONG THE GALLATIN Across the grass, flat on our backs, watching clouds drift by, blades of grass between our teeth in the days of you and I Two sunny girls filled with hope, giggles and dreams of tomorrow who would have thought these two girls would know and survive such sorrow Hand in hand we stood together weeding through the years holding onto the thought of dreams while choking on our tears As girls become strong women standing side by side fifty years and counting this friendship was our pride Although our hearts have been broken more than a time or two laughter comes from blades of grass still passing from me to you Dedicated to Linda Delores Matus, 1956-2018 R.I.P. -Susie Rosso Wolf

PRAIRIE AUGUST

Image
PRAIRIE AUGUST Completed August 5, 2021, Prairie August is an original acrylic and metallic painting that came to me while walking in my pasture during the last days of August. I will never forget the beauty and essence of the miraculous change of nature while summer was saying farewell. Prairie August was created with acrylics, metallics and dried prairie brush that I pulled up from my walking trail.  How it happens with me is so simple yet so incredibly important. I never walk without my camera or cell phone camera. There's too much to lose when you live in Montana. Every image rises up in striking beauty under the enormous Big Sky. Multiple colors blend together as a family while they give the eye something it sees, only once every twelve months of the year. This is why I love the Fall.  While returning back to the studio on the day I shot the many images of wheat and straw mixed with the last of the tall green grass, I rushed to my easel, opened up my paints and began to c...

TOES BEACH GIRL

Image
ABSTRACT DAYS AT TOES BEACH 48" x 24" Acrylics and oil. Completed on 3/20/2020 The Toes Beach girl often remembers Your shells and salt and rocks and foam She feels the comfort from your pillow Of sand beneath her heart that does roam She closes her eyes and hears your roaring Crashing and lashing against your piles She can sit and listen oh so sweetly To the music of your unchanging miles The Toes Beach girl has wandered plenty To finer coasts with grander swells But it is Toes Beach that lives in her heart It is Toes Beach in her heart that doth dwell She comes to you in times of sorrow When no other fix can subdue her pain She comes to you in sunshine and darkness she comes to you in fog and rain You hold the key to her constant longing Perhaps one day she will return She cannot ignore forever her yearning While the twists and turns of her life she does learn -Susie Rosso Wolf 1998

At The Edge of the Woods

Image
At the edge of the woods there are vibrations of life that flow through the quiet heart. If you see a stump nearby, sit and listen to the voices. The trees feel your sorrow, or joy. Trees know who you are and sense your intentions. Trees know when you sit quietly, holding back tears and whispering wishes to God. Trees know you. The moment you walk into the forest they know your intentions, and they know what you need. Trees will fill you with peace if you talk to them, in a way you might just feel a swish of love come over you from a dancing branch, if there is a slight breeze. At The Edge of the Woods came to me while I was walking in our forest garden. I sat on a stump with my sketchbook so I could draw the trees. I studied ten trees before I decided on the last tree in the row on the right across from the other five in the garden. The last tree sat and lived at the edge of the tree garden. It is a lonely tree without a bend in its trunk.  The painting I am sharing with you is th...

Russian Olive Leaves

Image
RUSSIAN OLIVE TREE LEAVES Sketch With Ink & Acrylics 8/22/2021 I have always believed that trees are among nature's quiet teachers. In every branch and every weathered leaf, they speak of resilience, grace, and the beauty of   simply enduring. My paintings are an invitation to slow down long enough to hear what they have been saying all along. May the peace of my leaves profoundly touch your heart. -SR Wolf

The Russian Olive

Image
THE RUSSIAN OLIVE ORIGINAL ACRYLIC,  2018 Some friendships ask for nothing more than our presence. For years, this magnificent Russian Olive tree has stood just beyond my kitchen window, quietly accompanying the rhythm of my everyday life. As I washed dishes by hand, I found myself returning to its weathered trunk, its twisting branches, and gentle movement of its silver-green leaves dancing in the Montana breeze. Over time, the tree became more than part of the landscape. It became a silent teacher. Its deeply rooted strength reminded me to remain grounded through life's seasons, while its ever-reaching branches spoke of hope, resilience, and the courage to continue growing toward the light. There were mornings when the sunlight filtered through its canopy with breathtaking beauty, and evenings when its silhouette stood quietly against the fading sky. It never demanded attention, yet it always offered peace. Painting this tree in 2018 was my way of honoring that unspoken relations...

WILD WHISPERS

Image
WILD WHISPERS Created 3/1/2020 Wild Whispers explores the quiet language of Montana's untamed landscape. Inspired by the resilient Caragana shrub that thrives outside of my kitchen window, this painting does not seek to reproduce nature, but to translate its rhythm-the fleeting brilliance of spring blossoms, the intricate tangle of woody branches, and the unseen movement of wind through them. Layers of gesture, texture, and color invite the viewer to wander rather than simply observe. Hints of yellow emerge like blossoms hidden within the brush, while expressive black forms suggest branches, leaves, birds, or memories. Wild Whispers encourages each viewer to discover their own connection to the Montana landscape and to appreciate God's gifts to the Rocky Mountains. Rather than portraying Montana as it appears, Wild Whispers expresses how it feels-alive, resilient, and quietly speaking to those willing to pause and listen. -SR Wolf

THE MARIE

Image
The Marie was created in honor of my gorgeous Russian Olive tree that lives just outside my kitchen window over my sink. Every day when I work at the sink, I am blessed to look out at the beautiful view of rolling hills, fields of green and the gorgeous sagebrush that blesses our land in Montana. The Russian Olive trees that live here are decades old and regal as they continue to survive the harsh weather of SW Montana.   This original 38" x 60" acrylic, oil and ink painting is available for purchase, prints, framed prints, coffee cups, T-shirts, bags and purses are also available.

CURRENT CONDITIONS COLLECTION

Image
Pandemonium 1 The Current Conditions Collection  Completed May 15th, 2022 As the first of this three-piece Current Conditions collection, Pandemonium represents the mayhem I experienced while walking in my pasture in early Fall. The wind came on slowly during the first ten minutes and then the wind became stronger and very loud. Suddenly I was hit on the side of my face with a five-inch-long stick. Moments later more ground debris flurried up in swirls as the fine dust from earths dirt stuck to the hair on my arms. As I ran back to the house with both eyes squinting and head pointed down to my feet, I finally reached our back porch ramp and high-tailed it into the back door. After recovering from the trauma of the wildest windstorm I had ever been exposed to, hours later I walked into my art studio, opened my paints for a Fall colored pallet, opened a new canvas that my sister Sharifah donated to my studio, picked up five paint brushes and five pallet knives, two grease pencils and...

ROSANN'S TONE POEM

Image
My mother, Rosann Rosso, was the inspiration for my most beloved composition entitled Rosann's Tone Poem. Why would I title a painting with such a strange name? Well, because Rosann was a great pianist, organist, and before I was born, she also played the cello but sold the cello in order to pay for my birth at Santa Monica Hospital in Los Angeles, California. My mother wasn't just a musician; she was also a very artistic gardener. One year, in the 1960's era, my mother decided to plant gladioli's all along the walls of our garage in the backyard. Rosann grew magenta, yellow and orange gladioli's that were gigantically spectacular. As an Italian family, every Sunday we all gathered at our table to eat together and it was my job, as the youngest of four children, to cut stems and to bring in a dozen or so of gladioli from our beautiful garden. I carefully placed them into a large vase that was made in Italy, a true family treasure. The gladioli were always placed in ...
